Concepts

A few terms are used throughout these docs.

Task

Something you spend time on: Code review, Support / on-call, Checkout redesign. Tasks are a flat list with no projects or folders. Each one has:

  • a name, which should be unique so search finds it,
  • a colour, picked automatically to stand out from your other tasks (you can change it),
  • a description for what the task is, and notes as a scratchpad while you work,
  • an optional star, which pins it to the top of lists,
  • an optional Jira issue when the Jira integration is on.

Archived tasks disappear from the switcher but still show up on timesheets and in history wherever they have time. See Tasks.

Time slice

A continuous stretch of time on one task, with a start and an end. The running slice has no end yet. Only one slice can run at a time.

  • Switching ends the current slice and starts a new one on the chosen task.
  • Stopping ends the slice. No prompt appears.
  • At midnight, the running slice is split automatically: one slice ends at 24:00 and a new one starts at 00:00 on the same task. That keeps each day's total correct.

Slices are what you edit on the timeline and entries screen. Each slice can carry a short note.

Gap

Time TimeTrove can't vouch for: you were idle past the threshold, the computer slept, or the app wasn't running. Time up to the start of the gap stays on the task you were on. The gap itself is held until you decide what to do with it:

  • give it to the previous task,
  • give it to a different task,
  • or discard it.

Discarded time is kept in a log for reference, but never counts towards totals or timesheets. See Gap attribution.

Daily total and goal

The daily total is everything booked on today's local date. The daily goal (8 hours by default) decides when the tracker's clock turns from teal to gold.

Week

Timesheets and weekly figures always start on Monday.
