Data and backup

All TimeTrove data (tasks, time slices, notes, settings, tokens and cached integration data) lives in a single SQLite file on your computer. Nothing is stored anywhere else.

Settings Database card with Reveal, Export and Import buttons

Reveal

Settings → Database → Reveal database opens the folder that contains the file in Finder or Explorer.

Export a backup

  1. Click Export backup.
  2. Enter the full path for the copy. The default is the database path with .bak on the end.

The export is a consistent copy, safe to take while TimeTrove is running and tracking. Put it somewhere your normal backups cover.

Import a backup

  1. Click Import backup.
  2. Enter the full path of a backup file.
  3. Confirm. This replaces your current data and cannot be undone.

Restart TimeTrove afterwards.

Moving to a new computer

Export a backup on the old machine, install TimeTrove on the new one, then import the backup.

Upgrades

Installing a new version replaces the app only. The database stays where it is, and TimeTrove updates its structure automatically on first launch.

Discarded time

When you discard a gap, its start, end and duration go into a discard log. They're never attached to a task or counted in totals. The total for any period is shown on Insights as Discarded.

Database errors

If TimeTrove can't read or write the database (for example, the disk is full or the file is locked), it shows a single banner at the top of the main window instead of a stream of pop-ups. Fix the cause, then dismiss the banner or restart the app.

Tokens

Jira and GitHub tokens are stored in the same local database. They're only sent to the hosts you configure. Treat backup files as sensitive.
